Did you know that Malaysia was formed 45 years ago today?

On 16 September 1963, the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and British North Borneo (now known as Sabah) joined to form Malaysia. Although in 1965, Singapore left Malaysia to become its own independent country.

Have you ever wondered why we have always celebrated the Independence Day on 31 August every year but never the Malaysia Day? Come to think of it, I don’t think the term Malaysia Day is actually recognised in this country. I remember reading something about this a long time ago. As far as I know, nothing comes out of it. We still do not celebrate Malaysia Day.

And that would definitely be another public holiday, in addition to the 14 we already have.

So, the question again. Have you ever wondered why we do not celebrate Malaysia Day? Is it because of Singapore’s secession? It must be a major sensitive issue if that is the reason. Perhaps there is another that only the top government people know about and don’t want to share with us.

Personally, we should celebrate Malaysia Day because it is a significant event in our country’s history. I mean, compared to the birthdays of the assorted kings, it definitely carries more weight and more value.

What do YOU think?
