It took a week for me to finally be satisfied with Celcom Broadband. My account was activated on Monday, 10/03/2008 and until yesterday afternoon, the speeds I’ve been getting were extremely low — maximum around 45 kbps. I called Celcom Careline and not surprisingly, the person at the other end was amazed and did not seem to understand why I had this problem.
Getting impatient with the whole thing, I went to the Celcom Service Centre at Jalan Semarak, had a chat with the girl at the counter and we finally discovered why I’ve been getting such low speeds.
My modem — Sierra Wireless AirCard 875U — was not able to detect Celcom’s 3G network.
Okay… Not really something new because that was the one thing I noticed the moment I was able to connect to Celcom. The question is why was I not able to access the 3G network. The girl advised me to either do something with the modem (upgrade the software etc) or buy a new one.
Buy a new one, huh? Maybe not. The one I have right now costs me RM670 and spending another RM800+ is definitely the very last option I would take.
Anyway.. I got back in the car, turned the air-con full blast and considered my options while listening to Anuar Zain’s latest album.
You should buy, by the way. Great songs.
I’ve been using AT&T Communication Manager to connect to Celcom. No problem with connecting, although slow like hell. I actually installed Sierra 3G Watcher earlier but I took it out since it didn’t seem to be working. Okay, what the heck, let’s try the Watcher again. So I reinstalled the program and voilla! Nothing happened.
Feeling tired all of a sudden, I made some calls and set up a lunch date with a couple of friends.
While waiting for them to arrive, I played around with my laptop again. And whaddaya know… I finally got a pleasant surprise. The 3G Watcher was working and I was able to access Celcom’s 3G network.
AY’s note 31/12/2008: As confirmed by Sierra, the 3G Watcher is specific to Sierra Wireless Aircards only because they contain the necessary drivers needed to operate the Aircard. My apologies for any misunderstanding or inconvenience caused.

I’m not sure how it happened but it did. I’ve been surfing continuously since yesterday and while there were ups and downs with the speed, all in all, it was much better than Maxis Broadband. At the very least, I did not get disconnected while surfing.
Speed? Here are samples:

I’m not going to comment on the server location. It is obvious Singapore is much better than Cyberjaya. But personally, I think I’ve made the right decision moving from Maxis to Celcom. How about you?

Modem for CELCOM bb tu memang compulsory ke?? or kena check modem yg built in dlm laptop tu compatible ke tak ek??
NOTE: My area is in NILAI, N9 and phone Line CELCOM and 3G tu memang full la.. so, speed for CELCOM bb ade prob x??

Built-in modem dalam laptop tak boleh guna untuk this type of broadband.
Untuk coverage, you can call Celcom Careline 1-300-111-000 untuk further info.

saya signup celcom broadband 3/7/2008, sehingga hari ni langsung tak dpt browse internet samada daru pc or laptop di opis atau rumah…. tapi yg heran bila g celcom cheras pg tadi, laju jerk dorang dapat browse. sampai sekarang nobody dari celcom careline yg bole tolong saya. balik2x dorang kata upgrade..
bukan masalah modem kan? saya guna hp nokia 5300 as a modem. any advice sir? thanks…

Dear Awangku,
Thanks to you, I finally can get rid of my irritating slow speed maxis bb without having to pay the RM200..(^_^) -> actually donno yet coz I’ve just receive a call from them this afternoon after my complain last saturday..
But neway, they give they word and based from your experience, I didnt expect it to be this fast.(^_^), maybe cannot tahan my angry voice..hehe.. Somehow, I feel very happy, great and relieve coz I finally stop being a good customer..Haha..
Now, I’m searching for a new BB, and of course as a student, my budget is quite tight.. Roughly, how much do i need to spend to get this Celcom bb? First registeration and monthly?
Thanks a lot, and best regards.

It’s good to hear that somebody has benefited from my experience with Maxis broadband.
As for Celcom broadband, they are currently offering free USB modems for new subscriptions to their monthly packages. You pay RM99 for Basic (speed up to 384 kbps) or RM129 for Advanced (speed up to 3.6 Mbps). There are terms and conditions, of course. One of which is you have stay subscribed for 18 months.
You can also buy a modem from them for RM499 when you subscribed to their monthly plans. You pay RM68 for Basic or RM98 for Advanced. If you do some maths, they come out almost the same as the free modem package. Minus the 18-month contract.
If you can find a cheaper modem somewhere else, by all means, buy it. Another option is to use a mobile phone that supports 3G or HSDPA as a modem.
When you subscribe to Celcom broadband, you will normally be asked to pay one month subscription fee in advance. Plus, maybe, some service charges by the reseller.
Hope that helps

Some words of advice… Celcom has its ups and downs, although not as bad as Maxis. So sometimes the connection will be slow.
I just thought you should know that before you storm Celcom after this. Hehehehe…

is using phone as modem is just using the usb plug?
i also heard they say can try out the 3G speed paying RM8 for 1 day use..by dialling *118#. izzit true? coz i wanna try 1 day to see if the speed is stable here..
Awangku Yusli
July 24th, 2008 at 2:01 am
I think you will have to use the usb cable that comes together with your phone to connect it to your computer. Installation may also be required. So do have your mobile phone resource cd with you.
For Celcom’s Daily Unlimited Broadband plan (RM8 per 24 hours), you need to be an existing Celcom 3G subscriber first before you can use it. If you already are, then subscribing is fairly easy.
1. Dial *118#
2. A menu will appear. Type 2 for Celcom Broadband.
3. Then type 1 to subscribe to Daily Unlimited Broadband.
4. Type 1 to confirm subscription.
If you have problems, you may call Celcom Customer Care at 1111 from your Celcom mobile phone or 1-300-111-000 from other phones.

im using celcom data services since 3 years ago.. at that time, 3g just been launched by celcom (celcom is the first operator to launches 3g in malaysia)..
but sadly, i dont have much money to buy 3G devices.. so i just stick with my gprs devices.. i use my hp as a modem, connected to PC/laptop. at that time, new celcom broadband plan not launched yet.. im using unlimited data plan, together with my celcom postpaid line.
what can i say is, celcom gprs connection is stable.. even it slow (of course, it gprs), but have no problem to surf internet..
nowadays, celcom still better than maxis in many factors.. first, of course the coverages.. celcom 3g coverages now is about 60%, while maxis is about 40% (according to MCMC).
in term of service quality, celcom still better (even not 100% ok, but much more better than maxis).. the average download speed is around 40KB/s (~320kbps) which is about 80% of full 3g speed depends on the server location.. for HSDPA, im not sure since im not testing it yet (although my devices support HSDPA)..
maybe we need some experts or any 3rd parties to do the test, since they know more about it rather than me. for example, let see a comparison test result made by 3rd parties for both maxis and celcom..
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r92/work_liao/celcom_3g_beat_maxis_3g.gif
Celcom also the winner of the Frost & sullivan 2008 Mobile Data Service Provider of the Year.
for details, visit http://www.telecomsawards.com.my/recipients.htm
To date (2nd quarter 2008) Celcom is the largest mobile broadband provider with largest number of subsribers in Malaysia. All this awards, test, and statistic shown us that Celcom broadband is better than Maxis broadband..
of course.. there is still lot of improvement to be done for both maxis and celcom.. but our question here is which one is better. that’s all..

celcom ni mmg kurang elok sikit lah..sebab masih x stabil lagi…
tapi, aku rasa screamyx lagi bagus…lagi stabil & mmg puas hati..

I have never tried Maxis on a Mac before, so regrettably, I won’t be able to help you here. Logically though, broadband connection should not be dependent on the OS.
I suggest you put this question up at MyCeloteh.com and see what those guys over there have to say.

How to avoid getting disconnected from the internet? I’m currently using exactly the same modem like yours with the RM98 monthly package. The connection speed is admittedly very fast.I can even download at speed up to 100++kbps.But then I keep on getting disconnected from the internet and the disconnection was very annoying. It ruined all my pleasant moment downloading and using my software for gaming purpose (e.g. Garena client).Any suggestion or solution for this problem Awangku Yusli? Thanks in advance. ^^

moon: If I’m not mistaken, you need to install a certain software supplied in the resource cd of your mobile phone first. Or you can download from the internet for your phone model. Then when you connect your phone to your laptop, you can choose whether to use it as a modem or to transfer files.
buluisme: Truth to tell, I face the same problem. Usually, I got disconnected 2 to 5 times every time I go online. I guess it’s Celcom. This wireless broadband is still not very stable in our country. Even when I was with Streamyx I got disconnected often. I suggest you use a download manager software for downloading files so that you can resume the download after you got disconnected. As for gaming, well.. I’m sorry I can’t help you there, buddy.
solve: If you move around (i.e. you use a laptop), use Celcom. The coverage is better than Maxis or any other wireless ISP. If you use a desktop, you can subscribe to Streamyx. You can try P1 Wimax. If you check their website, your area is under their coverage.

IMHO, Streamyx SHOULD be a better choice since wired broadband like streamyx is more reliable if you prefer faster and more stable connection.Celcom might be able to satisfy its customers because of the undeniably fast connection speed. But then again you have to consider the instability of their service – the ups and downs. The 3G coverage is there, but still you can’t connect through the internet. When at certain moment, you desperately need and longing for their service, you might feel depressed because you keep on getting disconnected.Just imagine downloading your favourite movie wihtout any download manager. The download rate was so awesome (128kbps for instance) but after 99% of download you got disconnected! Speechless… and it happens again and again.Like your daily routine.I myself had become very familiar with this kind of situation and it somehow teaches me the meaning of deep patience.LOL
Once again, I would like to stress out some good initiation steps in order for you guys to choose the right and better bb for your own good:
1. Check for the coverage in your place or anywhere if you happen to use the service in other places.
2. What is your budget? Usually and normally, the more you spend, the more you will get.So you have to consider sacrificing your money to get a better service.Ask the customer service officer about all the packages they’re offering. Some of them have got contracts and some are not.
3. What is your main purpose of having a bb? Is it for online gaming? or internet surfing? chatting? shopping? video streaming? non-stop downloading? bla bla bla.. If you’re looking for a very fast connection speed, buy the more expensive package that you can afford.
4. Buy genuine product of the bb you’ve chosen.Believe me, you’d have found the same modem which is way cheaper and you might think it’s a smart move to buy that modem and save RM300 pocket money to buy things that you want. However, the consequences are more important! The reckoned product looks very similar with the one that celcom suggested you to buy.But they’re never the same!!! I’ve experienced this once at Lowyat Plaza.I went to all the IT stores, looking for a celcom bb modem.Using my own simcard, I ask for their permission to test the connection speed.Guess what? As I expected earlier, the exactly same modem with higher price from celcom point has met the standard and it’s what I’m looking for.Very smooth, non-interrupted and fast enough to play DotA online.^^
while the reckoned modem, got disconnected for several times! So think before you buy.
5. Research is very important.Don’t just ask people around you.Give it a try and experience it yourself so that you know how it’d look like before making any decision to buy and use the service.Test all the bb services in your area if possible and make sure it’s genuine product!
6. List all the pros and cons of the bb you’ve tested.Compare the price, speed, coverage, reliability and did they meet your standard and desire?
7. Last but not least, make your final decision and choose the bb services that satisfy you the best and do not regret!
8. Try this out:
http://www.p1.com.my/
I have no idea how fast and reliable it is.But there’s still another alternative for us. =)

December 31st, 2008 at 9:16 am
Saya dah tanya Sierra dan ini response dia: “3G Watcher is specific to Sierra Wireless Aircards because they contain the necessary drivers needed to operate the Aircard. 3G Watcher does not contain drivers for other Aircards that are not Sierra Wireless”.
So nampak gayanya tak boleh la guna 3G Watcher tu untuk modem jenis lain.

I used Celcom BB before but lasted a month. Paid RM 98, tapi ada 3G je yang speed dia most of the time mengalahkan dialup. At least dialup persistent lagi. I have since moved to U Mobile which is way better paying RM 58 (after Dec ‘08 RM 68) a month for speeds up to 3.6Mbps (average in the morning is around 2.2Mbps) – ironcally U Mobile has HSDPA while Celcom has only UMTS at my area despite the latter’s stupid tagline “Muktamad, terpantas di wilayah Celcom”. At night can be a bit slow but definitely way better than Celcom, and the connection is persistent.
Go U Mobile!

I guess your area is not under Celcom territory then. Just kidding
I suppose it all comes down to the usage of your broadband, whether you only use it at home, or only around Klang valley, or all over the country. I travel sometimes and therefore coverage is the main thing when I subscribe. Compared to all the other providers (Maxis, Streamyx, P1, U Mobile, Digi etc), Celcom fits the requirement.
My hometown is in Sabah, and Celcom is only one with coverage there. So Celcom it is

Download speed is actually rather subjective. It depends on your service provider and also the server of the site you are downloading from.
folopiop.. did you manage to connect to the 3G network? I’m not sure whether you can get 3G or HSDPA in Sepang. 4 kbps is very slow with the package you are currently subscribed with. Have you tried downloading from other areas?
Phil.. 80 kbps is a very good rate. The upload is not that good, however.

I’ve read all the comments that been wrote in this blog. I’ve notice that there’s alot of complaint about their broadband package.. complaining about their broadband this and that.. If you are using WIRELESS broadband, of coz it’s difficult for you to get the speed that you want. As you know WIRELESS connection are not stable to compare with cable connection. There are lots of thing you need to consider if you want to get the speed that you desired. For example the devices that you use, the network coverage in your area, the location where you surfing, your FAIR USAGE POLICY allocate volume, the package that you subsribe and few other things. Anyway this is Malaysia, our technology is not that advance to compare with other country, example like Japan & USA…
Awangku Yusli
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:41 pm
I totally agree with you. It’s impossible to get the maximum speed stated by those ISP. What we complained about are mostly on getting connected to the network and getting decent speed for browsing. Even though they state that we can get up to 3.6Mbps, getting 1Mbps is actually more than enough for most of us. But of course, that is the problem. Most of the time, getting 100kbps is also difficult.

PLEASE CHANGE YOUR PLAN LIKE STREAMYX !! FOR EVERYBODY OUT THERE.. IF YOU’RE SEARCHING FOR MOBILE BROADBAND THAT TRUTHLY UNLIMITED, PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM CELCOM BB OR CELCOM BROADBAND !!! (DON’T CHOOSE CELCOM BROADBAND !) I THINK STREAMYX IS BETTER UNLIMITED AND REASONABLE PRICE FOR TRUTHLY UNLIMITED.

Software utk tarik speed? Mmmm.. tak sure plak. Kalo ada pun tak penah try. Windows ada jugak cara nak maximise internet connection.. tapi tak tau la banyak mana boleh membantu.
To me Celcom is much better kalo nak compare ngan Maxis, mostly in terms of coverage. Tapi kengkadang ada gak gila dia. Kalo nak pakai line, guna Streamyx jer. Lately ni somehow Celcom ada problem. Saya pun experienced masalah connection tak stabil. Kejap HSDPA, kejap UMTS. Memang tension. Tapi hari ni ok plak

Hi awangku. I see celcom bb has treat u quite well. lol. A lot of my friends have bought usb modems worth RM200 hoping to have wireless access to the internet at uni, but ending up paying for speeds up to 45kbps. I’m currently studying overseas, but i’m going back to msia end of the year, but every time i go bak, I dun hv internet access at home. But i found out there was celcom’s prepaid bb. Have u heard anything about it? or how good it is? I’m planning to get a netbook with built in 3G modem and use it to go online, by buying the celcom prepaird bb starter kit. I mean, it’s RM25, and u get unlimited usage for a week. But do u think it’s more worth it to get a netbook than a usb modem. Cuz i know usb modems are not cheap. Eventhough I have a laptop already, but at least next time I go back msia, I dun need bring my heavy laptop around if I get a netbook. And if i get a usb modem instead, I dun even need it when I’m overseas. What is ur opinion?

If your netbook can connect to the Celcom (or other) broadband network without having to use a USB modem, then I’d say, go for it. RM 200 is still quite expensive, even though it can actually be considered cheap if you compare it with other brands.
As for Celcom broadband prepaid, unfortunately I do not have any input for you since I have never tried it. You can go to Celcom website and see what information they have over there. RM 25 unlimited weekly is actually a good bargain. I’m currently paying RM 98 per month. Unlimited also but I got throttled after I reached my 5GB threshold. Very annoying.
One thing you need to check is whether you can access Celcom broadband without having to use their sim card. If you can, then problem solved. If your built-in modem can use sim card, problem also solved. If not, then you need to get yourself a USB modem. But then, this is also one thing I cannot confirm. Call Celcom.

Got throttled at 5GB threshold? No good already. I still need to have Streamyx then.

Have you tried to connect somewhere else? Your area may not be under the 3G coverage.

thanks for your broadband comparison….I am currently thinking to buy broadband,P1 or streamyx….can anyone suggest which is the best? I am currently in Tampoi, Johor Bahru….have coverage for broadband,P1 and streamyx….I go to maxis website and for my judgement it is cheaper and the speed is up to 6mb….is it really true?can it be trusted?…How about P1?..is it worthy to subscribe…also if possible I want an unlimited download….Please help me…

I suggest you do a checklist of all your requirements (e.g. speed, unlimited download, coverage, cost, wireless or wired) and tick the ISP that satisfies them the most. That way you can get a better comparison and then decide which one to subscribe. Also, ask the ISPs whether you can have a trial period to test their services.
